SEAO2-CDR is a Horizon Europe research project (Grant Agreement No. 101081362) that aims to help navigate the complexity of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), the concept of using the ocean to draw down and store CO2 from the atmosphere.
The science is moving fast, governance is lagging behind and the questions to answer are interdisciplinary: ecology, chemistry, economics, law, and public policy. Our aim is to create the tools, mechanisms and guidelines required to assess mCDR approaches with rigour and consistency.
As part of the project we will work on:
Assessment frameworks: how can we compare different mCDR techniques on their merits?
Monitoring and verification – how do we know a removal has actually occurred and persisted?
Governance and guidance: what rules, standards and processes are needed to enable responsible deployment of mCDR at scale?
We are using this forum as a place to share project updates, results and perspectives – and hopefully connect with others working on adjacent questions across the CDR community.
