Waste-to-energy with CCS as a carbon dioxide removal pathway in Europe

I’ll be presenting at the 4th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Removal in Milan on 12 June, as part of the session CDR Interactions: Mitigation & Adaptation 2.

My work focuses on waste-to-energy with CCS as a potential carbon dioxide removal pathway in Europe. Since waste-to-energy plants treat residual waste containing a relevant biogenic CO₂ fraction, capturing and permanently storing this CO₂ could contribute to negative emissions while also reducing fossil CO₂ emissions from waste treatment.

The key question I would like to discuss is: how can this pathway be assessed beyond theoretical removal potential alone?

This is particularly relevant as CDR assessments increasingly need to account for net removal performance, costs, infrastructure requirements and broader deployment conditions.

At the conference, I hope to exchange views on how waste-to-energy with CCS can be evaluated in a more integrated way, linking techno-economic performance, infrastructure needs and socio-political feasibility.
