The CDRMIP team is excited to present its new experimental design for CMIP7 at the International Conference on Negative CO2 Emissions. In this new round of simulations, we will focus mostly on emissions-driven activity-driven implementation of CDR in Earth System Models, as we evaluate impacts and uncertainties of resolving CDR in ambitious mitigation future scenarios, understand the state dependency of CDR effectiveness and assess Earth System responses to CDR implementation. We propose 3 experiments:
- Asymmetry in Earth system reactions to emissions vs removal pulses,
- Activity-driven CDR implementations of IAM-developed scenarios,
- CDR effectiveness of individual measures for different climates.
We are currently in contact with the Integrated Assessment Modelling community and reaching out to the Earth System Modelling groups to make sure that our design is relevant, interesting and comprehensive enough to answer the main burning questions about CDR. We are also exchanging with other modelling efforts, including a few that are part of CMIP7, ensuring that we can build on the previous knowledge on carbon removal and fill the gaps where uncertainty lies still. Join us for our presentation “The next phase of the carbon dioxide removal model inter-comparison project (CDRMIP)” on Thursday 11th June at 15h to learn more about our project. We are very keen to hear from you: your views, opinions and experiences when it comes to modelling CDR, so come by!
