Stockholm Exergi announces permanent carbon removal agreement with Microsoft, world’s largest to date

:loudspeaker: Exciting news on BECCS

Stockholm Exergi and Microsoft have just announced a historic agreement, marking the world’s largest permanent carbon removal deal to date.
The contract covers 3.33 million tonnes of carbon removals from BECCS at Värtan, Stockholm. Deliveries to Microsoft will begin in 2028 and continue for ten years. CEO Anders Egelrud believes this agreement will inspire other corporations with ambitious climate objectives. This milestone represents a crucial step towards climate change mitigation and the achievement of net-zero targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. Stockholm Exergi aims to seek additional private carbon removal deals and state aid to reach financial close on this project. Microsoft’s commitment to being carbon negative by 2030 is further complemented by their portfolio of carbon removal agreements. They are proud to partner with Stockholm Exergi on their pioneering BECCS project, which removes up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from the atmosphere once operational. The environmental permit for this project was obtained earlier this year, with construction planned for 2025 and permanent geological storage in the Nordic region. To reach a final investment decision, Stockholm Exergi aims to participate in Sweden’s aid program for BECCS and secure agreements on the voluntary carbon market while relying on EU funding and state aid as well as selling carbon removal units on the voluntary market for additional revenue.
