New UPTAKE Publication: Implications of Overshoot for Climate Change Mitigation Strategies

:red_exclamation_mark:In an article recently published at Nature Climate Change, ‘Implications of Overshoot for Climate Change Mitigation Strategies’, a group of authors from 14 research institutions based in 10 countries that were led by the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC) have examined the transition of overshoot during the past three decades. In doing so, they have highlighted its evolution from a scenario tool utilized to unpack ambitious goals to a fundamental component of climate scenarios. As a result, they have concluded that the presence of limited overshoot that may flow from a temporary warming of approximately 1.8 °C does not postpone the anticipated achievement of net-zero between 2050 and 2060. That said, they have cautioned that overshoot will intensify the severity of extreme events resulting from climate change and necessitate further reliance on CDR.
