[CDR Winter School]Carbon Dioxide Removals in Climate Change Scenarios

Join the new advanced course on Carbon Dioxide Removals in Climate Change Scenarios organised in the framework of the EU-funded UPTAKE Project by CMCC Foundation’s Future Earth Research School (FERS)!

This fully funded training opportunity offers an in-depth exploration of the ways in which Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) enters Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) and shapes the scenario space used by the IPCC and climate policy.

Course content

The course combines lectures, hands-on exercises with scenario data, and guided discussion of recent debates about equity of CDR burden-sharing, feasibility and sustainability limits, and overshoot risk.

The course will address the following topics:

  • Integrated Assessment Models and main modelling frameworks
  • Different CDR options and their representation and constraints within IAMs
  • Drivers behind scenario diversity, overshoot pathways and their reversibility assumptions
  • Quantitative and qualitative methods for ex post assessment of scenarios

Faculty

Directing the course is Soheil Shayegh, the Director of the Integration of Planetary & Industrial Carbon Cycle Program at CMCC Foundation.

The course will bring together internationally recognised faculty members and guest speakers from leading institutions in the fields of climate modelling and climate policy, among them Sabine Fuss, Head of Research Department at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and Catrin Harris, Researcher at University of Utrecht.

Who can apply

We are looking for PhD students, early-career researchers and practitioners in relevant fields. Basic quantitative methods and familiarity with R or any programming language are requested.

As the course will be delivered entirely in English, participants are expected to have a high level of English proficiency in order to actively engage with the course and interact with the faculty and the other international participants.

Registration and funding

Participation to the course is free of charge.

For all participants, the School will cover accommodation and meals during the course delivery, access to all course activities, and transfers from a designated meeting point to the course venue on the first and last day of the course.
