Description of the Company
Nina Energy Limited is a UK-registered company established in 2023 that designs, builds, and operates its own proprietary pyrolysis technology, manufactured directly by the company. This enables a unique model of localized, decentralized production of biorefineries, converting agricultural and forestry residues into biochar and bio-oil. Nina has already advanced from pilots to an industrial scale project in Ecuador, while simultaneously preparing deployments in Europe. With a proven 5× scale-up of capacity following the funding received by the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre, international investors, and strong grant support, Nina is positioned to deliver verifiable, durable CDR through biochar at global scale, while generating local jobs, co-benefits for soils, and resilient carbon removal pathways.
CDR Support
Nina has obtained financial support in the form of non-repayable grants, e.g. a contract in Ecuador covering ~70% of capital expenditure/operating expenditure of a large-scale facility, paired with a credit purchase agreement and participation in Remove Global Accelerator, Cleantech hub by Climatekic. Its investors include Next Step (lead investor), Carbon13 and Aceleralatam.
CDR Market
Nina operates in the voluntary carbon market. Its clients are NGOs, industrial partners, and municipalities based in Italy, Ecuador, broader Europe and South America.
CDR Regulations
Nina complies with local environmental permits on emissions and waste. It implements LCA and green chemistry principles and applies MRV frameworks aligned with voluntary carbon market standards.
CDR Outlook
Nina plans an industrial-scale rollout in Ecuador and Italy and seeks to build manufacturing capacity in Spain. The main barriers it is facing relate to scaling capital-intensive equipment and regulatory harmonization and it encounters risks stemming from demand and price volatility in carbon markets. The enablers facilitating its operations are grants, accelerators, purchase agreements and growing investor appetite for biochar.
CDR and Society
Nina engages with communities through local employment and partnerships with farmer cooperatives and municipalities, which offers the co-benefits of soil enhancement, improved waste management and contribution to regional climate goals.
